The Reawakening of the “Mammoth” at Gardaland Mammut becomes Italy's biggest family rollercoaster
(Veneto Italy) - Gardaland presents Mammut, its new and evocative attraction that adds excitement and mystery to the polar icecaps.
“Mammut” is Italy’s biggest family rollercoaster, which puts Gardaland under the spotlight once again confirming its leadership in the Fun Parks sector as the number one park in Italy and amongst the top parks in Europe.
The attraction is inspired by an excavation site hidden amongst the glaciers: it’s the end of the forties, and expedition of scientists has come across a fantastic example of a perfectly preserved frozen mammoth during their excavations at the North Pole. The place of the discovery is mountainous and icy and almost totally impervious to man: a special train has been be constructed to transport materials and scientists could be transported to the site of the discovery, under very arduous, if not extreme conditions.
But with thanks to that touch of unforgettable imagination that is typical of major attractions at Fun Parks, there’s a twist in the tale: during the excavation works, the beast, which has been extinct for many centuries, mysteriously starts to awake from its millennium slumber.
This is precisely the sort of emotion that visitors to the Park take home with them: a mission to an Arctic environment; departure from based camp with the researchers’ train that ventures into glacial meanders until it reaches the site of the discovery.
The train travels along single track line for more than 1,000 m as it twists and turns through curves and steep climbs and exhilarating descents that offer visitors unprecedented emotion: the train makes steep three climbs, with a maximum gradient of 48%, in addition to making 16 sudden changes of direction.
The “Mammut” project is large scale and extremely technically complex attraction: it covers approximately 5,000 square metres. It was assembled by attaching 1,672 bolts to the foundation and 3,600 bolts to the track joints. More than 500,000 kg of steel was used in its construction.
Yet the most important feature of the attraction, apart from the level of technology employed, is its impressive scenery, which has been planned down to the finest detail. Just imagine that for the construction of the base camp, Gardaland’s scenery designers managed to locate some rare vintage trucks once used by American Marines during the Second World War, the exceedingly rare GMC CCKW-352, six-wheel drive trucks that are unstoppable on any type of terrain.
The final result is incredible: in fact, a new theme area has been created inside the Park, the so-called “Polar World”, to go along side Gardaland’s five other currently existing theme worlds. In Italy’s Number One Park, visitors can experience the mystic charm of Egypt, or the traditions of merry “Olde Inglande”, the adventures of the Wild West and the mysterious underworld of Atlantis, …and now the hidden world of the Arctic unveiled!

Some of the noteworthy participants involved with Mammut include: Gianluca Frinchillucci – Director of the Polar Institute in Fermo, Alexei Tikhonov – Director of the Institute of Zoology of the Russian Academy of Science, and well-known journalist Valerio Massimo Manfredi.
The official opening ceremony for Mammut will be held next Saturday, April 12th, at Garda Lake.
